Greg Walsh, Playing Shamisen in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles in July 2008.
Greg Walsh, An American Shamisen Player Somebody was playing Shamisen (Japanese traditional guitar) music, when I went to Marukai Pacific Market in Gardena around 4 PM on September 20, 2008. As I looked closer, the player was a Caucasian American.
The note placed on the guitar case saying: "Hi, There. You must be wondering what this instrument is. This is a Japanese guitar, Shamisen. I lived in Japan for two years and learned this Shamisen from a master. I have been trying to master this instrument for 12 years. I am selling my CD for $5. Please buy my CD if you like."
I don't remember exactly, but the note said something like that. His name is Greg Walsh. He lived in Tokyo for two years and learned Tsugaru Jamisen from a master in Tokyo.
I bought his CD and mentioned, "I write a personal blog. If you don' mind, I will introduce you on my blog in Japanese and English." He replied, "Sure, sure, I welcome that. I need any kind of help."
He played "Rokudan" for me for buying his CD. I sat down at a chair next him to listen to it. This CD contains 8 pieces. It's a good price at $5.
It seems he plays around California. A video showing him playing Shamisen in July 2008 in Little Tokyo is posted on YouTube. I attached that video link above. He might be playing in your town next time.
