Obon Dance was performed both Saturday and Sunday in the evening. On Saturday it was from 6 to 7 pm and 7:30 to 8:30 pm after a 30 minute intermission. More than 300 people were dancing. They are members of local and other Buddhist church and practiced from a month ago. Many of them traveled far. They came from Hawaii, Las Vegas, Arizona, Virginia state, etc. There are more than 700 spectators along the street.
It's Japanese American style "Obon festival" that transformed from traditional Japanese Obon festival. Some songs were traditional, like "Tankou-bushi", but some are new and arranged song such as "Mottainai Baasan ondo".
'Mottainai" means 'such a waste' and 'baasan' means "grand mother'. There were many dance performers who are not Japanese decent. I thought dancing and having fun is universal, everyone in the world is the same.
盆踊りの一部を動画撮影しました。後で編集して追加しますね~。。
I recorded some portion of Obon Dance. I will edit and upload the video clips later.
There are Nisei Week Festival Grand Parade, Tanabata Festival, Mitsuwa Torrance Summer Festival, etc. this weekend and next weekend. I will list some that I know of.
