"Sunflower" (Helianthus annuus) is getting lots of attentions after the nuclear reactor accidents. It is native to Central America and the state flower of Kansas. Sunflowers can extract radionuclides cesium 137 and strontium 90 from contaminated ponds or soil following the catastrophic nuclear reactor accident.
Sunflowers can be used to extract toxic ingredients from soil, such as lead, arsenic and uranium. They were used to remove cesium-137 and strontium-90 from a nearby pond after the Chernobyl disaster.
Some Japanese TV program mentioned Sunflowers can remove esium-137 and strontium-90 by 95% in 20 days, but it was under a limited research environment. Sunflower seeds were planted in 30 km radium from Chernobyl power plant after the nuclear reactor accident in April 1986, but the radiation condition is still not suited for people to live in the area, yet, after 25 years. But it's a huge improvement thanks to sunflowers.
These Sunflowers are blooming, 3 minutes from my house near South Bay Galleria, Redondo Beach, CA. Photos taken on May 7 and 8, 2011. They also have corns at the right side corner. I'm looking forward to see the corns are covered with kernels....(Well, hopefully I can get one ear with a permission !?)
The Movie, "Gaia Symphony No.6" will be screened in Irvine on Thursday, May 19, 2011 from 6 pm. A ticket is $10 per person. All proceeds will be sent to UNICEF （Japan Disaster Fund), so please send a check ($10 times number of tickets), payable to UNICEF （Japan Disaster Fund) to Fumiko Ishii, C/O Irvine Valley College, 5500 Irvine Center Dr. Irvine, 92618.
