"Mottainai Ramen" opened recently in Gardena, a suburb of Los Angeles. We went there in the afternoon on a Sunday in July, 2010. It's in Pacific Square Mall and used to be "Peruvian Japanese Restaurant".
We waited 10 minutes after signing our name on the sign-up sheet.
。。 There were some empty tables and seats, but nobody noticed customers waiting outside. After waiting for 10 minutes, we were finally seated. There was no menu on the table. We waited 7 minutes but nobody came to our table or near-by. Out of that circumstance, I yelled, "Excuse me. Bring us the menu, please." Soy Sauce Ramen with fine Noodle and the Soup was bland and sweet, possibly from Mirin cooking Sake.... With $1 more, they will make it a large portion. Also, they have "Magic Bomb" spice ball for $1.50. My friend requested for pepper, but nobody brought it. She went to the bar counter to get pepper, but there was no pepper there also.
It's Tonkotsu (Pork Bone) and Soy Sauce flavored Soup with medium thick and straight Noodle. The Soup tastes bland and sweet. If you want to eat good tasting Tonkotsu Soy Ramen, you should order "Magic Bomb" spice ball. It's a small portion like a Ramen in Japan. If you want an American size Ramen, a Large portion for $1 more will be better.
It's $1.50 during Lunch time, so I ordered this. They did not serve this to me for a long time after they brought my Ramen Noodle. I yelled and asked for it after waiting for 5 more minutes.
Juicy Gyoza Dumpling was $2.95 for 6 pieces, but they were sold out.
There were 4 servers in early 20's. They seemed to be not experienced. There are only 3 kinds of Ramen Noodle, but they made a lot of mistake on the order between Regular and Large portion of Ramen Noodle. And you need to wait a long time to get your food. We don't want to go back to "Mottainai Ramen" for at least one to two months from now.
Next door inside Marukai Pacific Market, there is "Shinsengumi 2 GO Ramen". Across the street in Tozai Plaza, there are "Kiraku Ramen" and "Tampopo Ramen". 210 yards to the West, there is "Umemura Ramen", 430 yards to the West, there is "Hakata Shinsengumi Ramen", and 540 yards to the South on Western Ave., there is "Bistro Miyoda Noodle House". There are 7 Japanese Ramen Noodle shops in a half mile radius. It became the hard battle-ground for Ramen Noodle.
They also have "Sapporo Lover" (Miso Ramen $7.80) with very thick Noodle, and it's supposed to be their best Ramen.
According to an article in Rameniac.com, Some Japanese people started this Ramen Restaurant as a joint venture with Takaraya, a prominent Kyoto noodle maker. Maybe the timing was wrong to visit, but I did not have a good experience there.
I went to eat "Miso Ramen" in mid October, 2010, their service was great. I asked to make the soup thicker for Miso Ramen, and it tasted great. A friend who visited there on Nov.26, 2010 said they closed that noodle house. It seems they were closed that day. They are usually closed on Tuesdays.
