Kitazou, Rice Vodka It was 1500 yen ($15) at Narita Airport. It's sold around 1100 yen at retail.
I flew back from Japan on Monday, 6/23/08.There were some happenings on the return flight.
First I flew from Fukuoka to Narita Airport on JAL at 7:10 AM. I checked in at JAL check-in counter around 6 AM, the personnel there told me to remove a bottle of vodka I had in the suitcase, because it might break and cause damages to other luggages. I bought it in Kagoshima (southern tip of Kyushu Island the day before in the heavy rains. It's made of black sweet potatoes, very special kind.) She knew I was taking a connecting flight from Narita to LAX. She said it's OK to carry a liquor as a carry-on item in the airplane. So, I did. I arrived, picked-up, and checked-in my suitcase as it is at Narita airport around 10 AM.
I killed my time until 2:25 PM from my Korean Airline's 2:55 PM flight from Narita to Los Angeles. At the departure security inspection gate, I was told liquid cannot be brought into the airplane as a carry-on item as an international safety rule. They confiscated the bottle of vodka right there. I argued about 3 minutes, but I thought there might be a Duty-free shop after that inspection gate, so I let it go. After going-through immigration gate for embarkation, there was a duty-free shop, so I bought a bottle of Japanese vodka made of rice. The departing gate for the flight was very far. I ran and reached to it just 8 minutes prior to the departure time. I was going to line in at the entrance for economy class, but I was told to move over to prestigious class (first and business class). I was told, "You have been upgraded to a business class because the economy class is full today." I was lucky. The foods and seats were very nice.
I experienced a business class on an international flight for the first time. Other passengers were relaxing on laid back seats with 150 degree back reclining, foot rest extending 60 degrees front, and sips of champagne and other drinks.
I could not have a drink because it was getting ready for departure, but one hour later, a menu was served. I got to choose dinner and breakfast among the menu. A pre-meal drink was served, and I chose Champagne (Piper Heidsieck). Seared tuna with wasabi mayonnaise was served as a pre-drink starter. For dinner, I chose French white wine (Chardonnay, Pouilly Vinzelles Vieilles Vignes, 2005). I selected Japanese dinner with sushi (squid, shrimp, and salmon roll) appetizer, Cauliflower cream soup, and Grilled sea eel kabayaki over steamed rice with vegetables. For a dessert, I selected Haagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream.
Another selection for dinner was Korean "bibimbap" offered with minced beef and seasonal vegetables and Seaweed soup. And a Western style dinner was Seafood and Chicken brochette on steamed rice with ponzu sauce, served with braised eggplant, carrot and blossom vegetable.
After a dinner, I could pull out my own entertainment screen to enjoy 7 available movies as I wished. I was thinking of sleeping through my return flight, skipping Economy class meals, but because I was upgraded to a business class, I decided to enjoy the excellent meals and movies.
For refreshment, they had ramen noodle soup with side dishes or fresh cookies, but I did not eat those.
For Breakfast, they served Seasonal fresh fruit, Yogurt selection. And for the main course, I selected Omelette with asparagus ragout served potato roesti, grilled ham and tomato with Croissant.
Other main course choice for breakfast was Korean style porridge or Grilled salmon fillet served with steamed Japanese rice with egg maki roll and green onion miso soup.
I was very lucky to experience my first business class flight. I enjoyed it very much.
