Video Clip (3:45")--Peter Myers, celist with Torrance Symphony Concert, "Cello Concerto #1 by Shostakovich"
Torrance Symphony Orchestra Concert I went to a classic concert of Torrance Symphony Orchestra from 8 PM on Saturday, October 18, 2008. I started going to this concert from January 2007, so it was my 6th attendance. It's free concert is held in January, March, May and October. Usually it's held on the 3rd Saturday. The next free concert will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2009, 2nd Saturday.
I became a member of "Friends of Torrance Symphony" from March 2007 by donating $50 per year. The benefit of being a member is you can enter the concert hall from 7 PM and listen to a lecture of Maestro, Frank P. Fetta. He is a conductor for the orchestra. Another benefit is you can meet and talk with the musicians. The annual fee for seniors and students are little lower.
October 18, 2008 concert's theme was "Premiere Musique", and played: 1. Summer Day Suite by Prokofiev 2, Symphony #35 (Haffner Symphony) by Mozart 3, Medelssohn Violin Concerto #1 (1st Movement)-with Candler Yu -soloist 4. Cello Concerto #1 by Shostakovich with Peter Myers-soloist (Both soloists are Young Artist Concerto Competition Winners.)
This performance was the best among the last 6 concerts I attended. 50 orchestra members played perfectly in unison without any gap and mistakes. They raised the membership fee of "Friends of Torrance Symphony" by $10 each from September of this year. Maybe the raise was beneficial.
Chandler Yu, the violin soloist is 12 years old. She wore a beautiful gold dress, and her performance was wonderful. A person who seems to be her grandfather was video-taping her from his seat in the 2nd front row.
Peter Myers, cello soloist is around 24 years old. He is a student at USC (University of Southern California) Music Master department. He is the cellist of the Saguaro Piano Trio, based in Los Angeles, which won Second prize in the 2008 Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. I took a video clip of his performance secretly. I attached it above. I might delete this video clip later.
The concert ended around 10 PM with standing ovation and cheers. It was almost full crowd of 554 seats. About half of them pay annual fees of the membership and entered the theatre from 7 PM. Non-members line up outside the entrance from 7 PM, and they entered the theatre around 7:45 PM. I entered from 7:15PM and reserved a seat for my non-member friend.
