It was a one day trip to Hiroshima from Hakata station in Fukuoka. I took a Shinkansen bullet train to Shin Hiroshima station, took a JR Sanyou main line to Miyajima-guchi station for 25 minutes. There is a Ferry terminal for Miyajima about 2 minute walking distance. I took a JR Miyajima ferry boat to Miyajima. The JR Miyajima ferry boats are operated every 15 to 35 minutes. I planned to meet a friend at Miyajima-guchi station. She is from Hiroshima and knows the area. I had a JR Pass, so shinkansen bullet train, a local JR train, and JR Miyajima ferry were free with that JR pass.
Another view from Itsukushima Shrine. The first shrine buildings were probably erected in the 6th century, and the shrine has been destroyed many times. The present shrine dates from the mid-16th century, and follows the earlier 12th century design. That design was established in 1168, when funds were provided by the warlord Taira no Kiyomori.
This Goddess statue was place outside of Itsukushima Shrine. There was another stone marking of "May Peace Prevail On Earth" on the left side. We prayed for Japan and world peace and perform In's in front of this Goddess.
Look at them. They are fat and gorgeous looking Oysters, garnished with Ponzu Citrus Sauce. Aki district/Miyajima are famous for Oysters. We had hot grilled Oysters with Ponzu Sauce and cold Beer. We were so happy......
Famous "Momiji manju" at Yamadaya. There are many varieties, such as with Cream Cheese, Chocolate, Green Tea, etc.

Tomato and Lettuce are not their Inventoried items when ordering, so you can say "Extra Tomato and Lettuce" to get more of them at the same price. I heard some people get extra Tomato and Lettuce to get more vegetables in their diet...
Film "Pray for Japan" will be screened from 4 pm on Saturday, August 18, 2012, as a part of Nisei Week Festival, at Aratani Japan America Theatre in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. It's a charity screening. The proceeds will be sent to JEN (Japanese Emergency NGO) that has been supporting the victims of Eastern Japan Earthquake.
Stu Levy of Tokyo POP, who introduced Japanese Anime to the world, rushed to the affected area of Easter Japan after 3-11-11 Earthquake and Tsunami disaster. He volunteered and stayed there for over 5 weeks. The victims asked him to film the recovery efforts, and this film was created. Stu Levy will be there to greet and for Q&A session.
Pray for Japan Nisei Week Screening: Date: 8-18-2012 (Saturday) Time: 4 to 6 pm (Door open at 3:30 pm) Place:JACCC (in Little Tokyo) 244 S. San Pedro Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012
"Gyoza Eating Championship" will be held little before the film screening in front of JACCC theater from 2 pm on 8-18-2012. The contestants will compete how many Gyoza dumblings one can eat in 10 minutes.
Here is a plan. You skip a lunch and go to "Gyoza Eating Championship" from 2 pm. Take a rest little bit, and go to "Pray for Japan" screening from 4 pm. If you would like to participate the "Gyoza Eating Championship", it's better to get there little earlier and register for the contest.
Obon Dance was performed both Saturday and Sunday in the evening. On Saturday it was from 6 to 7 pm and 7:30 to 8:30 pm after a 30 minute intermission. More than 300 people were dancing. They are members of local and other Buddhist church and practiced from a month ago. Many of them traveled far. They came from Hawaii, Las Vegas, Arizona, Virginia state, etc. There are more than 700 spectators along the street.
It's Japanese American style "Obon festival" that transformed from traditional Japanese Obon festival. Some songs were traditional, like "Tankou-bushi", but some are new and arranged song such as "Mottainai Baasan ondo".
'Mottainai" means 'such a waste' and 'baasan' means "grand mother'. There were many dance performers who are not Japanese decent. I thought dancing and having fun is universal, everyone in the world is the same.
I recorded some portion of Obon Dance. I will edit and upload the video clips later.

It was around 3:30 pm. Many Pancake restaurants close for the break between Lunch and Dinner time. We went to "Tokubei" after getting that info. from a pancake restaurant we went to the first time but they were taking the break time. It's located on the second floor of a building, and it was not easy to find. This restaurant is open from 11 am to 2 am without any breaks.
They serve Lunch Specials until 5 pm. We ordered a draft Beer and "Lunch Special Grill" Pancakes. It's 850 yen ($10.75) and comes with Pork Meat, Chowmein Noodle, Squid, and Shrimp.
The Hiroshima style Pancakes are being cooked on a large iron plate in the open kitchen.
The hot grilled Hiroshima-style Pancake is served on a hot iron plate at your table. You will eat it with an iron spatula, called 'kote' after pouring Okonomiyaki Sauce, Mayonaise, Dried Bonito Flakes, and Dried Amo-Nori Seaweed. The Egg was melting in a bed of Pancakes and Noodles. I was impressed by this Hirosihma-style Pancake. It's so good with a cold Draft Beer. It made me so happy.

"Hiroshima World Heritage Site: On August 6, 1945, the first atomic bomb in history was dropped and exploded 600 meters above downtown Hiroshima, killing more than 200,000 people. I visited Hiroshima Dome on May 28, 2012.
Take a Hiroden surface train to "Genbaku Dome". It's right there from the train station. My girlfriend and I were talking and we missed that station and went to the next station, "Kamiya-cho West". It's the biggest shopping area in Hiroshima city. We walked the underground malls. We found a flower shop and got some white flower to take it to the Hiroshima Dome site.
Hiroshima Kamiya-cho, right after the atomic bomb attack
We prayed for the Hiroshima atomic bomb victims, families, peace in Japan, and world peace. We also performed "IN"s of humanity.

原爆ドーム碑 /Atomic Dome Memorial On August 6, 1945, the first atomic bomb in human history exploded in the air, 600 meters above this building, "Hiroshima Prefecture Industrial Hall". One bomb took more than 200,000 lives, and destroyed everything withing 2 km radius. We will protect and preserve this building with help of the donations given by the numerous people in Japan and all over the world who hope for peace. So that this tragic fact can be learned by the people in the future generations. We will preserve this building forever. 8-6-1947 Hiroshima City.
It was hot like Summer with 29 C (88 F) temperature on May 28th. It must have been hotter on August 6th. The atomic bomb victims suffered severe burns and rushed to the river, wanting for water. We placed the white flower we got at the flower shop and prayed here for some more.
My girlfriend treated me for Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki (Japanese Pancake) in Kamiya-cho after this. I got on to a Shinkansen bullet train, and I saw a double rainbow circling the sun from the window. The photo is not clear through the window, though.
"Kakko-chan came to LA": Kakko-chan, Ms. Katsuko Yamamoto who is called 'Japanese Mother Teresa' came to Los Angeles. There was her seminar and a screening of the new movie, "I Will Blaze A New Trail" from 6:30 pm on August 2, 2012. Ms. Katsuko Yamamoto is a special education teacher in Ishikawa prefecture, Japan. She helped and touched so many people's lives and souls.
She has dealt with children who were anencephalic, born without brains. or children with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), or others with handicaps. Several of them could not speak when she met, but they gradually started to talk. She learned a lot of things from these children. The movie, "The Miracle Of The Gifted Quarter" was released some years ago. In the movie, she talked about the important roll of each person in the world, including those handicapped children.
The movie, "I Will Blaze A New Trail" is in Japanese with English subtitles. It was the world premier in Los Angeles on August 2. It will be released in Japan next month. It is about Toshiya Miyata, a special education teacher, co-worker, and a friend of Kakko-chan, who suffered a brain stem hemorrhage on 2/20/2009, and he was not expected to survive at that time. Kakko-chan did not give-up on him. Now he can communicate.
Ms. Yamamoto has created the "Snow White Project" to foster information exchange and help people in "Locked-down syndrome" state.
Her last night's message was: 1) "Those who are born with handicapped genes saved the lives of others in a country in Africa when the entire nation's population was about to be wiped out by Malaria. So that many people are saved by those who are born with handicaps."
2) "Thousands of people in the world are in 'vegetable" state due to accidents or sickness and cannot move and communicate. That includes "Locked-down syndrome". They can understand and hear what's going on around them. There are many methods they can improve and can communicate with others. Please spread the message to others to save those who are in 'vegetable' state."
After Kokko-chan talked, Doctor Yutaka Niihara (UCLA Medical professor) had a speech for 10 minutes. He developed the medicine to cure 'sickle red blood cell syndrome' and he is known as the world top-level expert doctor specialized in cancer at UCLA Harbor Medical Hospital in Los Angeles. He joked and talked about how patients families and friends like Kakko-chan will influence the doctors.
There were a speech by Ms. Yasuko Iwasaki, a movie director of "I Blaze A New Trail", a speech by Hiroshi Sakane who is the anthropologist and president of Amano Museum from Lima, Peru, Book Sale of Kakko-chan's books, Book signing, and Coffee Break Chat time with Coffee, Green Tea, and Cookies, as well.
