Okinawa World is Okinawa Prefecture's foremost theme park and presents the local history, culture and nature all in one location. The parks main attraction is Gyokusendo. 5000 meter long cave that was formed approximately 300,000 years ago, it offers today a 890-meter promenade to the public. It was explored by professor Hiroshi Yamauchi of Ehime University in March 1967 when Okinawa was under U.S. occupation.
There are over 10 million naturally formed Stalactites, and it's the highest numbers in Japan
There was a golden table shaped Stalactite where water merged and became a river. The surface of the water was shining blue and beautiful. I could not get good photo of it because it's dark. It's named "Blue Fountain" Clickhere for the photo.
It was used for a new year variety show "Santaku" on January 3, 2011. They display this sign at that spot. A comedian, Sanma Akashiya and a singer and actor, Takuya Kimura explored the cave looking for a treasure.
The cave is one way. It took about 40 to 45 minutes walking and viewing inside. There is also a scenic village of old time Okinawa and workshops that allow experiencing Okinawa's traditional industrial heritage and local folk craft such as glass blowing and pottery.

↓ "Megumi JAPAN, Eastern Japan Trip": I visited Eastern Japan for the first time during my Japan trip in later half of May, 2012. I participated "Megumi JAPAN" who has been supporting the disaster area since 3-11-2011. The project I was assigned was "Seeds of Hope" sunflower project. Two days ago they tweeted the photo of the first bloom of the Sunflower in the area. I took it with my iPhone and uploaded it here.
"Megumi JAPAN"'s headquarter is located near "Rikuzen-Toyosato" station in Miyagi Prefecture. I left my hotel in Shinjuku at 8 AM on May 18th. I took an "Chuo-kaisoku" express train to Tokyo Station. Then, I took Shinkansen bullet trains to Sendai and Furukawa stations. I took 3 more local lines from there and reached "Rickuzen-Toyosato" at 1 PM. It's 18 minute walking distance from there. I asked to call a taxi. I got to "Megumi JAPAN" in 2 minutes. It took 5 hours one way from Tokyo.
It was raining in Eastern Japan while I was riding trains. It stopped raining when I got to "Rikuzen-Toyosato" station and became cloudy. I saw the slide of photos taken right after the 3-11-2011 disaster in Ishinomaki area and helped packing Sunflower seeds for 20 seeds per plastic bag, and dowsing off from the jet-lag in the afternoon. There were several inside, but 15 people were out volunteering in the rain. They came back little after 5 PM.
午後7時から皆で夕飯タイム。その日は沖縄名物タコライスと卵焼きでした。ご馳走。美味しかったです。 Dinner time from 7 PM wit everyone. The menu was "Taco Rice" from Okinawa and Tamagoyaki Omelet. It was delicious.
Two local ladies come to prepare dinner every day. It's a great relief for the volunteers who work all day in the disaster area and come back. They don't have to drag their tired bodies to prepare dinner. The delicious dinner seemed to create vital energy and willingness there.
A big room is used for men, and two small rooms are used for women to fold out Futon beds and sleep. There are some Futon and blankets that people left. You need to bring your own bath towels for shower.
Everyone wakes up at 7 am, and finishes breakfast and cleaning. There is Radio-taiso exercise and morning meeting from 8 am. Everyone leaves for Ishinomaki, the project area at 9 am. It was bright and sunny from morning. It was the first sunny day in 10 days or so in the area.

I took a photo of the debris piled up high and very far with my camera zoom lens. They are piled up along the coastal line where people can no longer live.
We took out the remaining debris and weeds and dag the soil, and planted Sunflower seeds at the house we got a permission. We did this one house at a time.
There used to be many housings in the area. The volunteer work continues until 4 pm or later each day.

Some people who live in Los Angeles and experienced volunteering with "Megumi JAPAN" told me, "Seeing once is worth hearing it over 100 times. It's better to experience it yourself than hearing it from others." So, I went to experience it myself. I agree and understand the meaning of it. Japan is still a wonderful county!
There are many volunteers in early 20's. They save money and come to volunteer. They keep repeating it, called "Student team". There are some who quit their works and came to the disaster area right after 3-11-11 and remained there. There are several who has a regular full time job on Monday to Friday, and drive to the area Friday night and volunteer in the area on Saturday and Sunday. They drive back to work in Tokyo, Chiba, Saitama, Kanto-area Sunday night and work from Monday morning, called "Weekend team". Thank you for your helping hands and spirits.

"Debris Needed for Seawall Forest": I traveled to and saw the disaster area in Eastern Japan on May 18 and 19, 2012 by joining "Megumi-Japan" non-profit organization that has been helping the disaster area since 3-11-2011. The debris are piled up at the coastal line where nobody lives now, so they are not in anybody's way. Prime Minister Noda has been urging other Japanese cities and towns to accept the debris from the disaster area, but such problem did not exist.
The professor Miyawaki of Yokohama National University has been suggesting to make a Tsunami Seawall Forest along the coastal line in Eastern Japan. The debris are needed for that project.
Tentsukuman wrote on his blog about this recently. I pick out and translate some portion of the article below.
Professor Miyawaki rushed to the Eastern Japan disaster area and suggested, "Let's make Seawall Forests using the debris in Eastern Japan." He continued to propose the idea.
A project team was formed. The former prime minister, Morihiro Hosokawa became the project chairman. Other famous people such as Soh Kuramoto, Yasushi Akimoto, and some other art directors joined the team.
Finally, the first planting was held in Iwate Prefecture in late May, 2012.
The merits of making the Seawall forests are numerous. The top merit is it requires huge volume of the debris. According to Professor Miyawaki's calculation, there are not enough debris to make Seawall Forests along the disaster area in Eastern Japan (it's only less than 5 % of required debris).
So, if we construct Seawall forests along the coastal line of the disaster area in Eastern Japan, there is no need to spread the debris to all over Japan. It also creates massive jobs and bring millions of funds and money to Eastern Japan.
Also many people can participate planting of the forests, including children and older people. By participating the projects, people will like the towns and cities even more.
By creating Seawall forests, the Ocean will be revived and there will be more fish. The fishermen in the area will benefit from it as well.
The role of politicians is to make decisions. And our roles are to inform the politicians and support the politicians who can make them happen. The problem is already solved.
I will add Professor Miyawaki's quotes below: "Let's think positive. Forests that protect lives, Forests that coexist with the Earth and Economy, and the Forests that can be praised around the world for the Earth environment--they can be created."
"It's a chance to make it happen. Let's make forests for the memorial of the 20,000 plus victims and the forests of hope to protect lives of the survivors. Let's start from what we can do for you and me. It's our chance right now."
We should not forget Japan is spreading the area where water, soil, land, vegetables, fruits, cows, pigs, chickens, eggs, and fish are being contaminated with radiation. There may not be space to live in Japan in a couple of years.
Update /追記: 6/21/2012 14:28 Los Angeles プロジェクトが発足されたそうです。ご協力お願いします。
