The director, Stu Levy appeared on the stage after the show at AMC Del Amo Torrance (LA area) and greeted the audience and did Q&A session. All proceeds of the movie tickets will be sent to JEN (Japanese Emergency NGO) that has been supporting the victims of Eastern Japan Earthquake. Then, I was very fortunate to participate the celebration dinner with his staffs after the show.
My friend S told me about this movie on March 11, 2012. In Los Angeles area, there are 2 locations, AMC Torrance and AMC Blocks OC, screening this movie from 7 pm on March 14, 2012, but the tickets were not selling well. At 3 pm on March 11th, 86 out of 160 seat room was sold at Torrance and 30 out of 180 seat room was sold at AMC OC.
Stu Levy and other staff members made this film without pay, and AMC theaters will be playing this film for free as a courtesy and all proceeds will be sent to Eastern Japan disaster victim support organization, JEN. Friend S told me, Setsuko, and Mie to write a blog and or spread the message by grass-roots email mailing lists. Friend S listed it on Japanese site, Vivinavi, herself twice. Then, the tickets got sold more and more.
On March 14th, 400 seats were sold at AMC Torrance, and they opened another room in the last minute. At AMC OC, it was moved to the largest room with 400 capacity, and half of it was full, and many other people bought tickets On-line to donate and did not show up. What a big success of the grass-roots-movements.
After watching this movie, I thought how vast and wide area the disaster struck. You don't know where to start the rescue, volunteering, and the clean-ups.
So many thousands of people lost houses, work buildings, family members, friends, everything they owned. There was no food or drinking water for the first 3 days. In the coastal region, most all city halls, prefecture state halls, police stations, schools, housings, Internet hot spots, telephone poles were washed away by the powerful Tsunami. Entire towns disappeared at some regions. There was no electricity, internet connection, telephone connection for days.
Then, thousands of volunteers rushed there to help by leaving their work and things behind from all over Japan and all over the world. What a huge love!
Three Pakistani guys came with truck load of food good for 1500 people when the people in the shelter was sharing one half of cold Rice Ball a day. They cooked hot Pakistani Curry Rice every day for 1 month as volunteers. They did the same when M8 Hanshin Earthquake struck Kobe and Osaka area in 1995.
Stu Levy was in Tokyo from March 9th, 2011 to make amends with his Japanese suppliers. Two days later the giant earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis struck. Within days, he abandoned everything and drove northeast up the coast to Ishinomaki city with a friend with truck load of food for 1000 people, rice, drinking water, etc. to volunteer for the recovery efforts by joining JEN. He took out the debris and muds from schools where people were using as shelters, and from other buildings.
Then a leader of JEN asked him to record a film of the clean-up efforts, so that they can show it to their children some days. Stu did 1 hour of filming a day and continued the clean-up efforts for six weeks.
I bow to them. It was very inspiring to see these people striving and making best efforts, cooperating, and those volunteers helping people with unconditional love. Then, I thought what can I do?
Stu was in the midst of a career meltdown. His 14-year-old company, TokyoPop, an L.A.-based importer and distributor of Japanese manga and anime, was in dire straits. Borders bookstores, one of his company’s premier retailers, was in bankruptcy and owed TokyoPop close to $1 million –- and Borders wasn’t paying. He rushed to Ishinomaki, the Tsunami struck area, right away, and the disaster scene was so devastating and huge. He thought his problem looked so tiny compared to it.

"Spicy Ramen", the top photo, had 3 levels of spiciness. 1 (Spicy), 2 (Hot), and 3 (Very Hot + $0.50). We tried level 1 spiciness. At first it was O.K. Later on, the spiciness spread through mouth and I felt as if my body was on fire! It was very hot.

”Pray for Japan” is about moving forward from tragedy. It’s about the people who lost their homes, their jobs and those who lost family members and their friends but yet are determined to rebuild, to keep living and doing all they can to bring normalcy into their lives once again. Full of inspiration and hope, Stuart Levy’s “Pray for Japan” is a documentary that is highly recommended!

"Pray for Japan" is a feature length documentary film I began when volunteering in Tohoku, Japan after the earthquake and tsunami tragedy. I shot 40 hours of footage over 5 weeks in Tohoku, interviewing over 30 people - from victims to volunteers. The goal of the film is to share with the world the same inspiration I felt from meeting these real-life heroes. No matter how difficult, how insurmountable was the challenge they faced, these people overcame. The battle to rebuild Tohoku and Japan continues - and the world must not forget their story.

On March 11, 2011, Japan's Tohoku coastal region was destroyed by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and devastating tsunami that followed. PRAY FOR JAPAN takes place in the devastated region of Ishinomaki, Miyagi - the largest coastal city in Tohoku with a population of over 160,000 people. Filmmaker Stu Levy - an American living in Japan - filmed the tsunami aftermath during his trips to Tohoku as a volunteer and over a period of 6 weeks, captured over 50 hours of footage. PRAY FOR JAPAN focuses on four key perspectives of the tragedy - School, Shelter, Family, and Volunteers. With each perspective we meet victims who faced significant obstacles and fought to overcome them. Through these four vantage points, the audience is able to understand the vast ramifications of this large-scale natural disaster - and the battle these real-life heroes fought on behalf of their loved ones and their hometown. http://www.prayforjapan-film.org

"First Torrance Cherry Blossom Festival" was held at Columbia Park in Torrance on Sunday, March 4, 2012. I worked from morning to evening that day. The work place is very close to the park, so I walked to the park little after 1 pm.
Most of all 110 Cherry trees planted in the park were at full bloom. Only one or two Cherry trees were not blooming, yet.
Chinese ladies dance and singing were being performed when I was arrived at the park. It ended right away. Six to seven Japanese Taiko drums were set up on the temporary stage in the park. I waited 30 minutes, but Taiko performance did not start and I left there and walked back to work.
Beautiful Cherry blossoms at full bloom.
The flowers look comfortable, surrounded by warm sunshine.
I went to Columbia Park again around 6 pm after work.
The moon was up there in the sky. Cherry blossoms are being showered with moon lights. (Sorry, my photo is not that good....)
Cherry blossoms at evening. I felt "wabi" and "sabi" of watching Cherry blossoms a evening when it got little bit dark.
The crowds and the tents and booths were gone. I could see Cherry blossoms at full bloom all over.
I tried taking a photo of Cherry blossoms with Sunset in the back.
Thanks to beautiful cherry blossoms, the people who donated cherry trees, and people who are taking care of the park.
I also went to Lake Balboa Park in Van Nuys to see cherry blossoms. Last year the cherry trees there were at full bloom around Feb. 26th. But this year it was 1 week early. They will be at full bloom around March 10th this year. There are 4000 cherry trees there.
"Torrance to hold first Cherry Blossom Festival": Torrance holds the first Cherry Blossom Festival on March 4 from 11 am to 3 pm at Columbia Park, ushering in a year featuring a series of similar events as the city marks its centennial on Jan. 21, 2012.
The free festival will be held beneath 110 cherry trees planted in the southeast corner of Columbia Park near the intersection of 190th Street and Prairie Avenue in north Torrance.
The fund for the trees were donated by the Buddhist organization Soka Gakkai International over the last 10 years at the suggestion of a Torrance resident who is a member of the group. They planted 10 trees a year since 2002, so it's the 10th anniversary this year.
It started to bloom a week ago. I went to the park on Feb. 26, 2012, sent my gratitude to Cherry trees, plants, Sun, heavenly phenomena, and the great mother nature and enjoyed the beautiful cherry blossoms.
Cherry trees facing the south near 190th Street were at full bloom, but cherry trees in the center of the area were not blooming, yet on Feb. 26, 2012. It must be spectacular with many more cherry trees blooming around March 4, 2012.
Cherry blossoms were enveloped by soft lights. They had beautiful fragrance and healed my soul and spirits.
Columbia Park 4045 190th Street Torrance, CA 90504 @ Prairie Ave.
Free parking space is available, but it could get full during March 4th Cherry blossom festival.
