After getting a snap photo taken, passengers will ride the train.

A Trip to Napa Valley and Wine Country
At 7 AM on August 28, 2008, we left Redondo Beach and drove to Napa Valley.
We arrived at Novato, 25 miles southwest of Napa at 3 PM, and checked in at a hotel.
Then, we went to Napa Wine Train main station in downtown Napa to try its Gourmet Express dinner for the first time.

The Vista Dome, Gourmet Express and Silverado Grill each have their own kitchen and specific menu. Award-winning Executive Chef, Kelly Macdonald uses only the freshest seasonal ingredients, earth friendly produce, humanely raised meats and line caught fish. Each meal is cooked to order aboard the train. Some of the side dishes and desserts are prepared in the Napa Valley Wine Train¡Çs Culinary Arts Center and finished onboard during the three hour excursions. Even the sorbets are homemade! Special selections are offered to meet your specific dietary needs.

The trains were renovated classic built around 1915 to 1917 and Vista Dome cars built in 1947.
The 3 course lunch is around $38, and the 5 course dinner is around $46. A train fare is around $49 per person.

A dinning table on the train.

Other options are "Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre," "Moonlight Escape," "Vintner's Lunch," "Appellation Dinner," and "Family Fun Night". For Christmas, there is "Santa Train".
The Napa wine train runs twice a day: one for lunch and another for dinner.
Depending on your choice of program, the train cars will be separated. There are more than 10 train cars connected. If you wish, you can select to ride the train without reserving for lunch or dinner and buy your own meals at the dining train car.
Please refer to the website of Napa Wine Train.

Tea, coffee, and 12 percent tips are included with a lunch or dinner course, but wine is not included. If you wish to give more tips, you are welcomed to do so.

Our table was early seating. At the dining train car, we had appetizer to the main course. The train arrived at the destination station. We were told to change to a lounge train, about two train cars behind. The train switched the direction after 30 minute stop and headed back to the other station. At the lounge train, we had coffee, tea, and desserts.

We were very tired after driving over 450 miles (720 km) to Napa that day, so we fell asleep after having desserts.

The 5 course dinner was pretty delicious and well presented.
It came with appetizer plate, walnut and lettuce salad, watermelon and pineapple sorbets, an entree and desserts.
For entree, the selection was Roasted Beef, Roasted Chicken, Grilled Pork Tenderloin, and Fresh Seafood of the day.
For wine, we ordered Wine Train 2005 Nappa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. It was $34 for a bottle.

The late seating passengers had appetizer and wine at a lounge train for one hour, and then had the rest of the 5 course dinner at the dinning table.

For a dinner train, the check in time was 5:40 PM, took a snap shot in front of the train around 6 PM, and got onto the train. It departed at 6:30 PM and came back to the main station around 9:30 PM.
The snap photo and a train photo in a nice leather folder was sold at $25 each.
I did not like our snap photo, but I picked it up and purchased it at the main station, because I wanted to keep the train photo, capturing the front side of the train.

Kitajima's Katsu
Menchi Cutlet sold at Kitajima Meat Store in Tokyo, Japan.
It's sold for 700 yen, around $6.40 for 5 pieces.

Energy of Olympic Gold Medals Came from Beef Cutlet (Menchi-Katsu).
A few days ago, I saw a Fuji TV News footage of hundreds of people lined up in front of Kitajima Meat Store in Nippori, Arakawa-ku, Tokyo to buy Menchi-Katsu, ground beef hamberger steak cutlet. The store is owned by parents of Kosuke Kitajima, defending Olympic Champion of 100 meter Breaststroke and 200 meter Breaststoroke swimming events.

The store was closed for several days due to cheer Kosuke Kitajima at the Beijing Olympics and re-opened on August 20, 2008. Hundreds of people lined up to get the famous Menchi-Katsu cutlet.
People believe that Kosuke Kitajima was able to win Olympic gold medals because he loved the Menchi-Katsu and he ate them often.

¡ù¡ù¡ù¡ù¡ù¡ù¡ù
Where can I get Menchi-Katsu in Los Angeles? I wondered.
I remembered Curry House Restaurant serves Menchi Katsu Curry Rice.
Last Wednesday, I went to Curry House Torrance to get stone grilled Menchi Katsu Curry.
They have this stone grilled version and also a regular Menchi Katsu Curry Rice.
Other type of stone grilled curry rice at Curry House was mentioned in my previous blog.
Please refer to "Eel Curry", blog #57.

Also I had "Aji Cutlet and Fried Shrimp Combo" at Katsu Hana at Mitsuwa Market Torrance store yesterday. It came with Miso Soup, Steamed Rice, Potato Salad, Pickles, and Hot Tea.
They had this special menu from 8/15/08 to 8/21/08 for the first 40 plates each day. Their Pork Fillet Cutlet combo is pretty good, too.

For snacks, I munched on "Sauce Katsu" with Hiroshima style pancake sauce.

"Katsu" means "Winning" in Japanese.
As I ate more and more "katsu" I felt like we can win more and more.

Two days ago, USA women's beach volleyball team, May-Treanor/Walsh won against China and won gold medals. For them, it was the 2nd consecutive Olympic gold medals, back-to-back to 2004 Athen's Olympics.
Yesterday, USA men's beach volleyball team, Dalhausser/Rogers won against Brazil and won Gold medals. They formed the team just 3 years ago and won gold medals!

Japanese Women's softball team won against USA. It was the last time Softball and Baseball were a part of Olympics games. They were elmited from the Olympics.
For the last Olympic softball game, Japan got Gold and USA got Silver medals.
Congratulations!

#89 Hot & Sour Fried Whole Fish $6.50

As I watched 2008 Beijing Olympic game coverage, I felt like having Chinese food.Especially I wanted to eat deep-fried Chinese food that I cannot make at home.

So, I went to Seafood Port Chinese Restaurant in Torrance. It's just 5 minutes by car from my home in Redondo Beach.

This restaurant is the second restaurant of Seafood Town Chinese Restaurant that opened more than 25 years ago in South Torrance. Seafood Port opened about 10 years ago.

All menu and pricing are the same. The main chef at each restaurant is different, so cooking style is different.
Seafood Town is known for oily, hot and spicy, and little salty seasoning.
Seafood Port is mild and good for health conscious people.

It's been 14 years since I started to visit Seafood Town Restaurant. There was a long waiting line for 40 to 50 minutes all the time. The pricing was between $3.50 and $4.50 for lunch then.

As soon as they opened Seafood Port Restaurant, 10 years ago, I started to go there most of the time. If you avoid the peak lunch hours, you hardly wait to be seated. And this restaurant is a lot closer from my house and my place of work. Now their lunch special is between $5.20 and $6.50. The price went up compared to 14 years ago. Lunch special comes with soup, rice, and Tapioca dessert.

My favorite is Hot & Sour Fried Whole Fish. It's a deep-friend whole white fish, garnished with Hot & Sour sauce with chopped green onions, green chili pepper, and red pepper. Usually they serve two big fish on one plate. It's $6.50, and it's a pretty good deal.
Another favorite is House Special Chow Mein Hong Kong Style. It is a deep-fried crispy noodle and sauteed squid, shrimp, chicken, BBQ pork, and vegetables. It's $6.00.

There are 100 kinds of dishes among Lunch Special Menu, categorized under Vegetables, Meats, Chow Mein Noodles, and Seafood.
It's interesting to try them all if you can. I like most of the shrimp with vegetable dishes and clams with vegetable dishes. Fried shrimps and fried chicken dishes are good also.

Cheese 923
Parmesan Cheese Bel Gioiso( aged 10 months ), sold at Trader Joe's or at other stores,
Parmesan Reggiano, made in Italy ( aged 20 months ), and
Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, sold at Costco or at other stores.

Here is my favorite appetizer for wine.
You will cut or crush Parmesan Cheese into pieces and dip it to Balsamic vinegar.

I prefer Parmesan Cheese aged about 10 months.
Parmesan Reggiano Cheese is aged 20 months or more and too hard to bite.

I often get Parmesan Cheese Bel Gioioso from Trader Joe's store.

There are several kinds of Balsamic vinegar.
The one made in Modena, Italy, and aged more than 2 years is delicious.

My recent favorite is Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, under Kirkland brand, and sold at Costco.
It's about $10.89 for 1 liter ( 33.8 Fl o z) bottle.

Try it for yourself.

Poke 909
Albacore Tuna Poke Garnished 8/4/2008¡¡¢¬

My coworkers went fishing last Saturday and Sunday off the coast of San Diego and Baja California, Mexico and caught Blue-fin tuna and Albacore tuna.
One of them made home made Tuna Poke and served it for us today.
Here are some photos and recipes of Poke.

1. Dice fresh sashimi tuna into a half inch pieces. Mix it with soy sauce, red peppers (dried medium-size pieces), Hawaiian salt (or ground rock salt), black pepper, sugar, and sesame oil in a mixing bowl.

2. Thin-slice green onions.

3. Mix #2 and #1, and sprinkle white sesame seeds.

4. Add crushed Macadamia nuts as garnishment when serving it.

Shin Lunch ¿´¥é¥ó¥Á $8

I went to Shin Yakitori Dining yesterday for the first time.
There was Monjiro Yakitori Restaurant there, previously. A new owner remodeled the interior and re-opened in August or September, 2007.
It's located in Southwest Torrance, on Hawthorne Blvd, near Lomita Blvd, on the west side, in a strip mall.
There are China Grand Buffet Restaurant, Sully's Restaurant, PHO Hana Restaurant in the same mall.

For Lunch, they are open on weekdays, Monday thorough Friday. For Dinner, they are open 7 days.

Yesterday I went there for lunch, and I had a Shin Lunch Set. It came with Shredded Cabbage and Potato Salad, Ground Chicken Rice Bowl, Yakitori Chicken (Char-broiled Ground Chicken balls, Chicken Thigh), and Miso Soup. It was $8. I became full, and I finished only half of Ground Chicken Rice Bowl.

For Lunch menu, they had Curry Rice, Pork Cutlet, Oyako-don (Chicken and Egg Rice Bowl), Salmon Teriyaki and Chicken Teriyaki, and etc.

For Dinner menu, they had different kinds of Yakitori, Hot Pot dishes, Grilled Rice Balls, Udon Noodles, Ala Carte dishes, and etc.

I want to go back there for a more relaxed dinner next time.

Chabuya Tonkotsu (pork bone soup) Ramen ¤Á¤ã¤Ö²°¤È¤ó¤³¤Ä¥é¡¼¥á¥ó $6.95

I went to Chabuya Tokyo Noodle Bar in Torrance, California with my friend.

There are at least 14 Japanese ramen noodle restaurants in South Bay, the area south of LAX airport, within 15 minute driving distance.
It is considered high-competition area. The older ones are Umemura, Hakata Shinsen-gumi, Men-bei, Kiraku, Koraku, which opened 20 years ago or before.
The middle-aged-ones are Eboshi, Ma-ma Ramen, Shisen, and Tampopo. The recent few years old ones are Asa Ramen, Gardena Ramen, Santo-ka, Shinsen-gumi Pacific Market, and Chabuya Torrance shop.

There might be some others, but I only know these noodle shops. I have tried all except Shisen Ramen, because I cannot eat large cut red chili peppers.

Let's discuss the main topic. We entered Chabuya noodle bar around 1:50 PM on Sunday, 7/27/08.
There are about 10 tables and 14 seats at the counter-bar. The posters of old Edo period Portugal merchants in Nagasaki are displayed in the restaurant, and it creats atmosphere of free trade foreign market.

There were not too many customers, because of the time we entered. It was late for lunch. A three-generation Caucasian family of five ( 3 year-old girl, her parents, her uncle, and her grand mother ) were having lunch. It seems ramen noodles are well-eaten by Americans these days.

They offer wide varieties of menu.
We took time selecting what to order. Both of us ordered the top one on the menu, "Chabuya Tonkotsu Ramen".

The noodles are home-made straight and thin. The soup is Tonkotsu (pork bone soup) with soy sauce.
Their home-made Chashu pork are very soft and thin. They broke apart by touching with chopsticks.
The portion size is medium. It's not too big or too small. Their bamboo shoots were little sweet and matched well with the soup.

The hot ramen noodles alone could be ordered at $1 each. So, I ordered another ramen noodles to be added to the same soup base.
They call it "kaedama", meaning "changing noodles".

Besides Tonkotus, they have "miso" (soy bean paste), "shio" (salt), garlic, spicy ground chicken, Chashu pork ramen, Vegetable ramen, and Zenbu (Everything) to serve all toppings in one bowl.

They also have Ramen Salad, gyoza dumplings, cold Summer noodles, Pork bowl, Beef bowl, and Chicken bowl.
They have dinner appetizer menu from 5 PM daily.

I searched Internet. This Chabuya Ramen noodle Bar started in Tokyo in 1996. They are opening more and more shops.
In Los Angeles area, there are at least 2 shops; one in West Los Angeles, and the other in Torrance.

In Summer, I feel like eating eel and curry.

There is a perfect menu to eat both at the same time.

It's Stone Grilled Eel Curry Rice at Curry House Restaurant.

For topping of this Stone Grilled Curry Rice,
there are other varieties, such as:
Rib Eye Steak, Seafood, Katsu (Beef, Pork, and Chicken).

Tonight I went to have a Stone Grilled Eel Curry.

They don't serve the stone grilled curry rice during weekday lunch time.
Perhaps, it's because it takes time to warm up stone pots.

The stone pot is heated well and sizzling hot like Korean stone grilled bibimpa.

Cafe Del Rey
4451 Admiralty Way,
Marina del Rey, CA 90292
310-823-6395

On Sunday, 7/6/2008, I went to Cafe Del Rey for a Sunday brunch.

A 3 course pre-set meal Sunday brunch was served at $38.
It included a glass of champagne, mimosa or sparkling cider.

An executive chef is Jason Niederkorn.
He creats California French, Japanese and Pacific influenced creative dishes.

A live Jazz music of piano, flute, and saxophone is provided.
With a spectacular view of Marina, it creates a luxury atmosphere.

As its reputation, the food is excellent.

Six of us were seated at a table that seats 7 at the corner in the back.
I selected Crab cake and Pan fried Halibut,
and Trio of House-made Sorbets for dessert with a glass of champagne.

I tasted Seafood Sashimi Salad, and it tasted good.

This restaurant is very popular.
It is known for celebrities sighting as well.

Kincaid's Restaurant
Redondo Beach branch

Redondo Beach, CA 90277
Phone:(310) 318-6080

On Sunday, 6/29/2008, We went to Kincaid's Restaurant
at Redondo Beach Harbor for a dinner.
We made a reservation at 7 PM.

I am a member of their Dining Club, so they email me a $20 email coupon for
occasions, such as a birthday.
This time I received a $20 email coupon, and I used it.

Their seafood and Nebraska beef are great.

We selected "Halibut" and "Hawaiian Ahi Tuna Seared"
from the daily special menu.

We ordered Caesar's Salad to share.
Their Italian bread is really good, and always baked fresh and hot.
You can ask for second's or third's for free.

I mentioned "the occasion was for a birthday" while making a reservation,
they served a "Creme Blurie" with a birthday candle on the house.

Their wine selections are good,
but their beers are not fresh and not cold enough.

This restaurant in Redondo Beach location is surrounded by ocean.
It is beautiful and magnaficient to watch a sun setting in ocean
from your window seats at this restaurant.

Other locations include:
Bloomington (MN), Burlingame (CA), Carmel (CA),
Honolulu (HI), Milwaukee (WI), Norfork (VA), Oakland (CA),
Phoenix (AZ), Portland (OR), and St. Paul (MN).

Il Chianti Restaurant
24503 Narbonne Ave
Lomita, CA 90717
(310) 325-5000
Hours:
Tue-Thu 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. 5:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m.
Fri-Sat 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. 5:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m.
Sun 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. 5:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.

On Saturday, 6/28/08, I went to Il Chianti Italian Restaurant in South Torrance with my friend.
It opened in Torrance, California in 2004. It's main branch is located in Kichijoji, Tokyo, Japan.
It has other locations, such as Tokorozawa, Kawagoe,Tachikawa, Irima, and Shinsaibashi, Japan.

About a year ago I had a dinner at this restaurant, and it was around $85 for two of us with a bottle of wine.

On weekends and holidays, they have branch course menus. It seemed to be reasonable.

Pasta branch course is $13. It comes with soup, salad, assorted appetizer plate, bread or steamed rice, one drink (wine and beer included in the selection), and dessert.

Main Dish branch course is $16. It comes with all those extras as mentioned above.

Half Pasta and Half Main Dish branch course is $18. It comes with all those extras as above.

We chose Half Pasta and Half Main Dish course.
The pasta for the day was Pasta with white fish in tomato sauce.
The main dish for the day was Herb Grilled Chicken or Butter Grilled Salmon.
The dessert for the day was Tiramisu, Strawberry mouse, or lemon mouse.

I had a white Italian wine for drink, Herb Grilled Chicken for the main dish, and Strawberry mouse for the dessert.

I will upload photos below. When we went there, we saw Asian people mostly in the restaurant.
Three Korean ladies were enjoying branch courses across our table.

Our review is something was not quite right.
We thought their seasoning of salad dressing, pasta sauce, and etc. was too salty.
We like mild tasting. They use lots of salt and pepper to prepare their dishes.
Those who like salty seasoning, they love this restaurant.
We liked the dessert the best among the branch course.
This restaurant received 4 out of 5 stars at a local restaurant review site, Yelp.

Asa Ramen18202 S Western Ave
Gardena, CA, 90248

On 6/27/08, I went to Asa Ramen Noodle House for dinner.
This noodle house is only open for dinner from 6 PM and closed on Sunday.

They have thick soy sauce ramen noodle soup, mild soy sauce ramen noodle soup, and thick salt ramen noodle soup.
They also have several kinds of takoyaki (octopus balls cooked with flower, egg, cabbage, octopus on a special grill) and several kinds of appetizer menu for people who enjoy drinking.

I ordered mild soy sauce ramen noodle soup ($6.50) and Cheese Takoyaki ($5.50).
The ramen noodle soup used very thin noodles, and the portion was small, like a Japanese size.
It came with cooked bamboo shoots with soy sauce and sweet sugar taste, and it matched well with ramen noodle soup.

On 6/25/08, I went to Lazy Dog Cafe with my bosses and coworkers for lunch.
It's located at Del Amo Mall, Fashion Mall in Torrance city.
That section of the mall opened last July along with AMC theatre.
They have 3 cafe locations in Southern California near Los Angeles.

This cafe has wide variety of menus. My boss mentioned their "Grilled Chicken Club Sandwich" is the best in Los Angeles. Also their "Lamb Shank" is pretty good. It's rear to find at restaurants for lunch these days.

If you order an entree for lunch, you can add Caesars salad, Lettuce salad, or soup for $2.95.
The salad is huge, and one order is good for 4 people.

The Fresh Catch of the Day was Grilled Shark, so I ordered "Beer Buttered Halibut Fish & Chips".
It was pretty good.
For drink, I ordered "Tiger Woods", that is a combination of Cranberry juice, iced tea, coke, and something.
There is no refill for this drink, but it was refreshing and tasty.

A friend and I visited Alejo's Italian Restaurant in Westchester area, Los Angeles this evening.
They serve bread with olive oil with fresh chopped garlic. It has a very strong and spicy garlic taste.
We ordered a bottle of Frei Brothers 2003 Syrah wine from Russian River (Northern California), Mixed Italian Salad to share and tonight's specials, Salmon Tortellini and Seafood a la Mara Linguini.

They use a lot of garlic in every dish. An entree were around $16 each and serve plenty and tasty.
The set-back is they only have a few parking spots in the back. You need to find street parking near by.
It's about 5 to 6 minutes by car from LAX airport, going North on Sepulveda Blvd. to Lincoln Blvd North. If you don't mind finding a street parking, this is a great restaurant.

This restaurant has another branch in Marina Del Ray area. It's smaller, and they don't have a liquor license. You can bring your own bottles of wine there.
