On the private road to Iron Horse Vineyards. It continues for a few miles.

The Wine of Presidents, Kings, Queens...and Now the Pope.
We visited Iron Horse Ranch and Vineyards on Friday, August 29, 2008 around 10:30 AM.

Iron Horse is located in Green Valley in the coolest, foggiest part of the Russian River Valley, just 13 miles from the Pacific as the crow flies. There are approximately 160 acres in vine, planted exclusively to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Iron Horse is a marriage of two vineyards: the Sterling family estate in Sonoma County's cool, foggy Green Valley and son-in-law Forrest Tancer's T-bar-T Ranch in the Alexander Valley. The winery is best known for its Sparkling Wines, which have been served at the White House for four consecutive presidential administrations. Pinot Noir is the winery's rising star wine. One of its most highly allocated releases is the Cabernet Sauvignon from T-bar-T.
The Iron Horse name comes from a passenger train that passed through the Green Valley in 1905.

Forrest Tancer planted the core 110 acres at Iron Horse in 1970 when he was working for Rodney Strong.
Audrey and Barry Sterling bought the vineyard in 1976 and partnered with Forrest to build the winery. Forrest and the Sterling's daughter Joy were married in 1990. The Wedding Cuvee was originally designed for Joy and Forrest's wedding and this elegant sparkling wine is still produced today. It was toasted for Jenna Bush's wedding on May 10th, 2008, for the daughter of president George W. Bush.

Vineyards along the private road to Iron Horse Winery.

Iron Horse has now been served at the White house for four consecutive presidential administrations, beginning in 1985 with the historic Reagan/Gorbachev Summit Meetings, which ended the Cold War. The first Bush administration served our Sparklings at several State Dinners and brought our Classic Vintage Brut to Moscow for the signing of the START treaty. The Clintons chose Iron Horse for many occasions-most impressively for the offical White House Millenium Dinner New Year's Eve 1999 to toast the new Millennium. Iron Horse was served at the 200th anniversary of the White House attended by all of the living presidents except Ronald Reagan. He was too ill to travel at that time. It has been served to kings, queens, and the Pope on their visits to the White house.

They offer a 30 minute wine tour from 10:30 AM on Monday to Friday by appointment. We called a day before, but it was fully booked. When we visited the winery around 10:30 AM, about 6 people started wine tasting after the wine tour. It seems the wine tour is limited to 6 people each day---very limited.

The wine tasting is $10 for Sparkling Flight (5 sparkling wine) and Seasonal Flight (5 still wine).
It's $15 for Reserved Flight ( 5 reserved and rear wine ). We tasted Reserved Flight. The reserved wine can only be purchased after you become a wine club member of Iron Horse Vineyards. Among the 5 wine we tasted, we liked the 4th wine, 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, T-bar-T Vineyrads, Alexander Valley, 1.5 Liter. It costs $120 per bottle.

We purchased Iron Horse 2003 Estate Chardonnay and 2005 Russian Cuvee Sparkling wine, a bottle each.

You need to go though a narrow private road for several miles to get to this winery, so commercial big buses cannot get there. You need to travel in a small to mid size car.

Lately it is extremely difficult to get Iron Horse T-bar-T Cabernet Sauvignon wine, but Iron Horse sparkling wine can be purchased on their website and other wine websites. Actually their sparkling wine has been served at the state dinner at the White house.
Cheers and enjoy their sparkling wine. It's around $33 per bottle.

After getting a snap photo taken, passengers will ride the train.

A Trip to Napa Valley and Wine Country
At 7 AM on August 28, 2008, we left Redondo Beach and drove to Napa Valley.
We arrived at Novato, 25 miles southwest of Napa at 3 PM, and checked in at a hotel.
Then, we went to Napa Wine Train main station in downtown Napa to try its Gourmet Express dinner for the first time.

The Vista Dome, Gourmet Express and Silverado Grill each have their own kitchen and specific menu. Award-winning Executive Chef, Kelly Macdonald uses only the freshest seasonal ingredients, earth friendly produce, humanely raised meats and line caught fish. Each meal is cooked to order aboard the train. Some of the side dishes and desserts are prepared in the Napa Valley Wine Train¡Çs Culinary Arts Center and finished onboard during the three hour excursions. Even the sorbets are homemade! Special selections are offered to meet your specific dietary needs.

The trains were renovated classic built around 1915 to 1917 and Vista Dome cars built in 1947.
The 3 course lunch is around $38, and the 5 course dinner is around $46. A train fare is around $49 per person.

A dinning table on the train.

Other options are "Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre," "Moonlight Escape," "Vintner's Lunch," "Appellation Dinner," and "Family Fun Night". For Christmas, there is "Santa Train".
The Napa wine train runs twice a day: one for lunch and another for dinner.
Depending on your choice of program, the train cars will be separated. There are more than 10 train cars connected. If you wish, you can select to ride the train without reserving for lunch or dinner and buy your own meals at the dining train car.
Please refer to the website of Napa Wine Train.

Tea, coffee, and 12 percent tips are included with a lunch or dinner course, but wine is not included. If you wish to give more tips, you are welcomed to do so.

Our table was early seating. At the dining train car, we had appetizer to the main course. The train arrived at the destination station. We were told to change to a lounge train, about two train cars behind. The train switched the direction after 30 minute stop and headed back to the other station. At the lounge train, we had coffee, tea, and desserts.

We were very tired after driving over 450 miles (720 km) to Napa that day, so we fell asleep after having desserts.

The 5 course dinner was pretty delicious and well presented.
It came with appetizer plate, walnut and lettuce salad, watermelon and pineapple sorbets, an entree and desserts.
For entree, the selection was Roasted Beef, Roasted Chicken, Grilled Pork Tenderloin, and Fresh Seafood of the day.
For wine, we ordered Wine Train 2005 Nappa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. It was $34 for a bottle.

The late seating passengers had appetizer and wine at a lounge train for one hour, and then had the rest of the 5 course dinner at the dinning table.

For a dinner train, the check in time was 5:40 PM, took a snap shot in front of the train around 6 PM, and got onto the train. It departed at 6:30 PM and came back to the main station around 9:30 PM.
The snap photo and a train photo in a nice leather folder was sold at $25 each.
I did not like our snap photo, but I picked it up and purchased it at the main station, because I wanted to keep the train photo, capturing the front side of the train.
